"Every Body Is Made Up Of Moving Parts That Are Designed To Flow In Motion."

In the world of movement my story is not an uncommon one.

As a young child this body enjoyed movement through play, through swimming, through gymnastics, through ice hockey and as it grew, through dancing and circus arts. It had the desire to move its way traveling around the world and for some time that is exactly what it did.

Even a nasty automobile collision at age seventeen, which traumatized the body and wreaked havoc on life and limb, did not deter this movement.

Post crash, I chose to lead a nomadic active lifestyle in pain rather than come to terms with the severity of this body’s condition. It took actual debilitating pain later in life (due to herniated discs and broken bones) to halt that trajectory.

The inability to do the simplest of tasks like walking, literally brought me to my knees.

I experienced not just physical but emotional pain as I truly started to believe that this body was beyond repair.

The desire to keep moving introduced me to Pilates and as this body sighed a big thank you, I knew practicing Pilates was the way forward to meaningful function.  This body was finally able to get back to movement after a long romance with pain had all but immobilized it.

The toolkit that is Pilates gave shape and function back to this fragile body.

This did not come without first enduring more pain and motionlessness as I discovered that this body’s hypermobility and lack of strength were impediments to the health of the herniated disks and mal-aligned bones.

Pilates became firm friends with acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, chronic pain counselling, physical therapy and the MELT method as they moved together to triage this body into putting itself back together again.

Integral to this process has been the help of professional others, personal dedication, surrender, listening to and learning from this body as well as nourishing it with nutritious fuel.

At age 40, after many years of discovery, this body is on its feet again. It has moved back into the pool swimming whole miles, is on the bike rediscovering the city, carrying laundry up the stairs and experiencing functionally sustainable movement. It cherishes pain free locomotion and fully embraces uninhibited movement as true freedom.

Trusting the process and being proactive about learning have helped slow me down and humble my perspective on this healing path. These things take time and there is a long winding road of movement discovery out there to explore. I will be working toward improving my own function for the long haul and I look forward to meeting and working with you along the way.
